Natural Language Access to Relational Databases through STEP

چکیده

This paper introduces the STEP system for natural language access to relational databases. In STEP the administrator couples phrasal patterns to elementary expressions within a decidable fragment of tuple relational calculus. This phrasal lexicon serves as a bi-directional grammar, enabling the generation of natural language from tuple relational calculus and the inverse parsing of natural language to tuple calculus expressions. This ability to both understand and generate natural language enables STEP to engage the user in clarification dialogs when the parse of their query is of questionable quality. The STEP system is implemented and is currently being evaluated over a geography database. Additional evaluations are planned and will also be available on STEP’s website (http://www.cs.umu.se/ ̃mjm/step).

A STEP Towards Realizing Codd's Vision of Rendezvous with the Casual User

This demonstration showcases the STEP system for natural language access to relational databases. In STEP an administrator authors a highly structured semantic grammar through coupling phrasal patterns to elementary expressions within a decidable fragment of tuple relational calculus. The resulting phrasal lexicon serves as a bi-directional grammar, enabling the generation of natural language f...

A Phrasal Approach to Natural Language Interfaces over Databases

This report introduces the STEP system for natural language access to relational databases. In contrast to most work in the area, STEP adopts a phrasal approach; an administrator couples phrasal patterns to elementary expressions of tuple relational calculus. This ‘phrasal lexicon’ is used bi-directionally, enabling the generation of natural language from tuple relational calculus and the inver...

Automated Construction of Database Interfaces: Integrating Statistical and Relational Learning for Semantic Parsing

The development of natural language interfaces (NLI's) for databases has been a challenging problem in natural language processing (NLP) since the 1970's. The need for NLI's has become more pronounced due to the widespread access to complex databases now available through the Internet. A challenging problem for empirical NLP is the automated acquisition of NLI's from training examples. We prese...

Information Retrieval using Natural Language Interfaces

In Database Management System (DBMS) is collection of interrelated data and set of programs to access and modify the data. In Relational DBMS (RDBMS), data is organized inform of tables. In order to retrieve information from the database, the end user requires the knowledge of database query language such as Structured Query Language (SQL). However, not every user is able to write SQL queries a...

A Dialogue Manager for Accessing Databases

We present a logic programming based dialogue system that enables the access in natural language to the heterogeneous external relational databases of the Évora University. The proposed system has the capability of inferring user attitudes and uses ISCO in order to view the University relational databases as a part of a declarative/deductive object-oriented (with inheritance) database allowing ...
